Research Folder: 3 programmes/scripts similar to mine

1. Labyrinth

This programme is set in the south of France and is about two women, living centuries apart but have the same destiny. In the modern day, PHD graduate Dr Alice Tanner inherits a house in the South of France and is haunted by dreams of 17-year-old Alaïs Pelletier from 13th century Carcassonne. Alice is on an archaeological find when she discovers an ancient genocide spot, the story of Alaïs connects with Alice’s; Alaïs must battle to save 3 books while Alice must reveal the truth in a race against time. Realising they are the same and there is a person that connects them both.
Jessica Brown Findlay, John Hurt and Vanessa Kirby star in a two-part thriller adapted from Kate Mosse's bestselling novel. This programme is the main influence behind my script, having two women millenniums apart and have a link between them. I think ‘Labyrinth’ was a great idea and was very well made with a great script, so this is why I’m basing my idea on this particular programme as I think it is the most similar to mine.

2. Atlantis

Atlantis is a show on BBC about a man named Jason in search of his father, he washes up on the ancient and mysterious land of Atlantis, with many Greek mythological creatures, Gods and legends and has some trouble on the way. Although this plot and script is nothing like mine it does have similarities between them, for example, my idea takes place in Athens, a Greek Goddess is present and relates to the modern day main character, just like Atlantis. My idea shows glimpses of the past whereas in Atlantis it is set in the past and the main character is in that time but on the other hand, the Greek Goddess comes into the modern world to connect to the main character.
This programme will help me when shaping my characters and the setting as Atlantis is set in the Ancient Greek times so I will be able to review the episodes and get a deeper sense of what it was like to live then and what it looked like and what the characters wore so I can make my script as accurate as possible.

3. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

This American fantasy film is in a series about teenager Percy Jackson, who has a special ability to stay underwater for a prolonged amount of time, only to discover after a school trip to the museum that he is the son of God Poseidon, so he is demi-god (half mortal, half God) and he is being accused of stealing Zeus’ Lightning bolt. The film is about the struggle Percy has to discover who he really while having to battle and race against time to return the Lighting Bolt to Mount Olympus before the next summer solstice otherwise there will be war.
This film has similarities to mine as it is about Greek Gods and a person in the modern times. This time the main character is the son of a God without realising and gets thrown into the mythological world and I can take aspects of this to help me write my script as I can look at different creatures and different Gods that could be brought in during the glimpses of the past my character will have. It also has Athena and the daughter of her in the film which is very helpful to me as I can see different ways I could present Athena in my script.

You can read the screenplay here: http://screenplayexplorer.com/wp-content/scripts/The_Lightning_Thief.pdf

These programmes/films can help me make my script authentic and I can get different ideas for character personalities, the way Greeks dressed and what scene I could set it in and watching all these will be very helpful in the process of writing and planning my script.
